Cisco's Nexus 9000 product line, developed by spin-in Insieme Networks, is the company's response to the SDN craze
Cisco today unveiled what is perhaps the most anticipated product line created to address the growing software defined network (SDN) movement. The Nexus 9000 Application Centric Infrastructure switching portfolio, developed by the Cisco spin-in company.
The Nexus 9000 line is topped off by the eight-slot Nexus 9508, which can house up to 288 40G Ethernet ports, or 36x40G line cards in eight slots. The 9508 serves as the “spine” in the Nexus 9000 leaf-spine topology architecture.
One of the leaves in the leaf-spine architecture is the Nexus 9396, which supports 48 10G ports and 12 40G ports. Those 12 40G ports can be channelized into 4x10G each, bring total 10G capacity to 96 ports.
Another leaf is the Nexus 93128T, which features 96 10GBase-T ports and 8 40G ports. Like the Nexus 9396, all of the 8 40G ports on the 93128 can be channelized into 48 10Gs, bringing total 10G port counts to 128.
A competitor to the Nexus 9000 line – and to Cisco’s legacy Catalyst 6500 in data centers – is Arista’s new 7300X series of Broadcom Trident II-based modular switches, which are designed for middle of the row leaf/spine, or “spline,” data center deployments.
Also in the Arista “spline” lineup is the 7250X, a 2RU switch that supports 64 40G ports or 256 10G ports.
The Cisco/Insieme Nexus 9000 will also compete with Arista’s 7500E spine switch, which features 10/40/100G Ethernet interfaces on the same port and support for 1 million virtual machines across 1,152 10G, 288 40G or 96 100G Ethernet ports.
Other leaf-type devices the Nexus 9000 will go up against include the Arista’s 7050 and 7150 series switches.
