In pictures: Vocus Communications opens new Albany data centre

New facility houses 60 racks, features biometric and RFID security

  • Vocus NZ sales manager Steven Stanford opens the launch event.

  • The assembled crowd included media, telco and ISP representatives, and Vocus staff.

  • Communications and Information Technology Minister Amy Adams flew into Auckland to attend the Vocus launch.

  • Vocus Board of Directors chairman David Spence: "There's a great opportunity in New Zealand, and we look forward to investing more into this country."

  • ICT Minister Amy Adams: "In some ways it's no surprise to me that we are seeing the growth and the success in businesses like [Vocus]. ... Equally, it's no surprise given the incredible explosion we're seeing worldwide, particularly in New Zealand, in our ever-increasing hunger for data. ... Frankly, there's no sign of that slowing down."

  • Guests assemble outside the new data centre as ICT Minister Amy Adams prepares to officially open the facility.

  • ICT Minister Amy Adams and Vocus Board of Directors chairman David Spence declare the new data centre open.

  • Guests enter the new data centre through the 'airlock' between two reinforced doors. Access to the facility requires two-factor authentication via biometrics (fingerprint) and swipecard (RFID).

  • The new data centre includes two sealed cages for clients requiring an additional level of restricted access.

  • The caged areas each have a minimum configuration of 16 racks.

  • At the data centre's official opening today, all racks were still empty. The chilled water cooling system was not yet up and running, making the facility a balmy room-temperature.

  • With the data centre empty, the cable trays are pristine - only the bare minimum of infrastructure is presently in place.

  • Note the swipecard-controlled door locks on each rack, supplementing the conventional key locks below. These smart locks are remotely controllable.

  • Racks are available for colocation, by the full rack.

  • Cable management systems always look so neat before the cables go in.

  • Underfloor ventilation is protected by heavy metal grating.

  • ICT Minister Amy Adams tours the new facility with Vocus staff and guests.
