EDGE 2020 Goes Virtual
NORTH SYDNEY, May 3rd, 2004 – IDC has recently released the preliminary PC figures for the first quarter of 2004. The results from IDC show the PC market in Australia shipping 716,393 units (Desktop, Notebook and x86 Server) during 1Q 2004. This was a notable 9.6% growth from the final quarter of 2003, and a solid 17.3% increase from the same period in 2003.
The desktop market continued to perform below overall market growth but nonetheless increased by 4.8% sequentially in unit shipment terms. The notebook market regained its form by growing by an impressive 24.2% from 4Q 2003 and by 50.8% from the same period last year.
Based on these preliminary figures for the first quarter of 2004 the PC market saw growth for virtually all vendors in the market. IDC found all areas of the Australian PC experiencing growth including the x86 Server market which expanded by 28.5% sequentially off of a smaller installed base. However the highlight of the quarter was truly the notebook market as it grew by 3 points to make up over 28% of the PC market during 1Q 2004 in unit shipment terms.
"The Australian PC market can simply be defined as one of the most unique in the global market today,” stated Michael Sager, Market Analyst, PC Hardware. “Despite the fact that it is a mature market and one of the first countries to engage in a post Y2K refresh it continues to grow after depressed results in 2001 and 2002."
"While the growth in the first quarter of the year was strong vendors are watching the value of the Aussie dollar, cost of componentry, and growth of the global economy. This should also be a concern as the domestic economy is slowing after years of growth and the potential impact on IT hardware spend by enterprises" added Mr Sager.
