NORTH SYDNEY, April 6th, 2004 – IDC has recently completed a study of the local enterprise (250+ employees) market titled "Business Selection Criteria for Desktop Computing Environments." This study focuses on the Desktop PC buying criteria, vendor preference, market trends, and forecast analysis affecting the enterprise market in Australia. The key findings from this study were that the combined Retail/Wholesale and Education/Healthcare sectors will be the strongest areas of growth for the coming 12 months.
"The mature Australian economy combined with the appreciation of the dollar against the greenback ($USD) last financial year helped to push Australian enterprises to engage in the post Y2K refresh. This study has found that these refreshes are occurring in smaller tenders, and growth from notebooks, and to a lesser extent thin clients, is putting pressure on the Desktop PC market” said Michael Sager, IDC Market Analyst.
IDC has found that the top three Desktop PC purchase criteria for end-users in this market space are: 1) Consistent product quality 2) Ability of the product to meet business needs 3) Customer service and support
These top three are important considerations that vendors should consider when positioning themselves to the Australian enterprise market.
"It is critically important that vendors align their product strategy with end user purchase criteria. On the most important criteria of product quality, HP and IBM rated the highest while Acer and Dell received the lowest score, respectively."
"It will be key for PC vendors to properly position their product given end user feedback, utilise the proper channels and messaging, and identify the key areas of growth for the coming year with increased competition from notebooks and server centric computing" added Mr. Sager.
