Request Broadband launches new range of broadband voice solutions

Request Broadband Pty Ltd (Request), leading Australian broadband services provider, has announced the availability of RequestVoice, a new range of broadband voice solutions specifically tailored for medium and small enterprise customers.
The new solutions leverage the inherent capabilities within Request’s own broadband IP and ATM network to deliver business grade voice services in parallel with Request’s leading edge IP VPN and internet access products over the one broadband DSL access.
“Request has always strived to be at the forefront of providing innovative services using its national broadband network,” said Phil Sykes, Request CEO. “Now, by adding broadband voice solutions to our offerings, Request is able to provide all of an organisation’s fixed telecommunications requirements over one physical broadband access.”
Simply put, by using the one physical DSL access, Request is able to provide a compelling bundled solution for an SME’s fixed voice, data networking and internet needs. Business customers will be able to receive one bill for all these services and have one contact point for all service related enquiries.
Request’s voice solutions fall into two broad categories. Firstly, Request is enabling Voice over IP (VoIP) solutions across multiple business sites through the use of Request’s leading-edge private IP VPN solutions. Secondly, Voice over DSL (VoDSL) is being used to provide SME customers with full access to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) via standard telephony interfaces such as POTS and ISDN.
Voice over VPN (VoVPN): “We have coined the term ‘VoVPN’ to cover the first category - to distinguish our solutions from the more basic VoIP services which use the public internet for carriage of voice services,” said Sykes. “Whilst using the same underlying IP technology, our solutions are provided over Request’s secure, business grade IP network completely separate from the internet. This enables us to control quality and classes of service to ensure business expectations of voice quality are being met.”
A number of customers have upgraded their voice networks to take full advantage of the flexibility and efficiency available when using Request’s VPN for their voice needs. Request has successfully completed several months of field trials of its VoVPN service.
Ray Smith, Director Products and Services with Samsung Communications, a Request Partner, said that his organisation had trialed, and has now been using for some months, Request’s VoVPN solution internally. “The savings to our voice communications costs became obvious within a week,” said Smith.
Smith added, “The partnership between Request and Samsung Communications’ range of Enterprise IP Solutions delivers a number of cost saving and innovative solutions for our own customers, often without the need to purchase new handsets or implement new infrastructure. And Request’s business grade network is an important element in delivering the quality of service our customers demand.”
Samsung Communications is actively promoting RequestVoice to its business customers and currently has over 20 sites that have implemented the new VoVPN solution and realising genuine financial benefits.
Industry analysts, Frost & Sullivan, maintain that VoIP will account for approximately 75 per cent of world voice services by 2007.
Voice over DSL (VoDSL): Request’s VoDSL services allow existing customer premises equipment (PBXs, key systems and handsets) to be retained while providing businesses with a complete package of voice lines, competitive call rates and broadband data services.
Smart technology on the customer premises connects the existing telephone equipment and data network to the broadband service, avoiding the need for costly phone system upgrades or replacement. “We recognise that most businesses have made a significant investment in their phone systems and cannot see any justification for a costly upgrade,” said Sykes. “Our VoDSL solution protects that investment and offers medium and small businesses access to voice and data services that were the traditionally the domain of large corporates.”
Request’s VoDSL solution allows the business to retain their telephone number and line features, but importantly, breaks the recent trend towards increasing telephone line rental charges, breaking Telstra’s near monopoly on voice services into the SME market.
Additionally, Request believes that DSL access network technology has transformed the economics for delivering local telephone services to businesses providing a new commercial opportunity for Request’s service partners whose profits are enhanced by leveraging broadband access lines to provide both voice and data networking services.
