Hong Kong: Monday, July 12th 2004 -- Acterna, the largest provider of test and management solutions to telecommunications network operators, today announced the release of the Acterna PVA-1000, the industry's most powerful software product that network support groups can use to troubleshoot Voice over IP (VoIP) problems. The software, developed in concert with industry-leading VoIP equipment manufacturers and service providers, is now available in Asia Pacific.
The deployment of VoIP includes several potential pitfalls, making troubleshooting a vital component of the technology's successful operation. As with traditional telephony, VoIP problem resolution often requires listening to a telephone call to identify distortion components such as echo, delay, noise and loss. Extracting and reconstructing the VoIP conversation can be time consuming and may require multiple software tools and expensive, time-consuming manual operations. The PVA-1000 enables network operators to identify problems with VoIP signaling and quality in a single tool. The need to perform time-consuming manual calculations or capture file manipulations is eliminated, improving the speed, cost and efficiency of analysis and troubleshooting.
Jitter and packet loss in the VoIP transport network are two of the primary causes of poor quality. While many tools identify these impairments, the real need is to understand the impact on voice quality experienced by the end user. The PVA-1000 performs detailed analysis and troubleshooting of VoIP telephone calls, providing quick identification of VoIP transport-related issues by graphing jitter and packet loss. It plays back the audio of the original telephone call using jitter buffer emulation and WAV files (another competitive advantage of the PVA-1000), and can also provide full VoIP protocol decodes. Unlike any other product in the industry, the PVA-1000 can combine these tasks to accurately re-create the user experience.
In addition, the PVA-1000 enables customers to build and distribute custom software capture agents. This allows Ethernet capture files to be remotely generated by signaling-aware remote capture agent - another industry first. Using these intelligent capture agents, remote users can capture only those calls considered to have unacceptable quality and automatically send the relevant data to the support department for analysis. Use of the software capture agent eliminates the need to dispatch support personnel to remote sites. In addition, the PVA-1000 is highly flexible when it comes to capture file support, maximizing the existing investment in network analyzers.

Additional features of the PVA-1000 include: signaling-independent quality analysis of VoIP telephone calls, compatibility with Ethernet capture files from the Acterna DA-3400/DA-3600A, Domino network analyzers, and the Acterna HST-3000 (as well as analyzers from other vendors), and multiple licensing methods. The licensing method ensures the most flexible, cost-effective deployment possible. Adding new licenses is easy, and the licensing scales to meet the needs of the customer.
