Juniper Networks delivers carrier-grade VoIP

New high-availability features transform traditional best-effort voice services into carrier-grade solutions

Melbourne 8 June 2004 - Juniper Networks announces enhancements to its Voice over IP (VoIP) portfolio, J-Voice, introducing features to deliver highly resilient, carrier-grade packet voice networks. These new features include fast IP link detection and recovery, call admission control, enhanced IP routing for voice traffic and the extension of Application Level Gateway (ALG) support for the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). By implementing J-Voice solutions, carriers can migrate their traditional voice services onto cost-effective IP networks, with the flexibility to offer differentiated VoIP services according to customers’ needs.

"We aim to be a reliable, single source of telecommunications services for our business customers," commented Randy Nicklas, vice president of Network Engineering at XO Communications, a leading United States provider of communications services to businesses and carriers. "Being able to support multiple types of traffic like VoIP on the XO IP network, confident that the quality and performance will be consistently maintained, is crucial for us. The Juniper Networks portfolio has delivered the resilience, quality and assured experience our customers expect from XO Communications."

Already deployed in more than 15 networks worldwide, the J-Voice portfolio leverages Juniper Networks’ industry-leading routing functionality and modular JUNOS software, complemented by critical network level features, to provide a robust solution that addresses the key issues associated with delivering high quality and highly available VoIP services. This includes preventing and responding to router failures, as well as dealing with disruptions caused by traffic congestion or failed links.

New Carrier-Grade Features
With its new Fast IP Link Failure Detection and Recovery feature, Juniper Networks has delivered a first to the industry, reducing this process from seconds to milliseconds, a major requirement for carrier-grade packet voice networks. In addition, Juniper Networks is the first to implement call admission controls in an IP network. This feature ensures the network has adequate resources to support additional phone calls and is key to maintaining call volume and quality. Juniper Networks has also implemented newly enhanced IP routing techniques optimised specifically for voice services. These techniques are designed to ensure voice quality and availability are not affected by failures or congestion in the network.

Finally, Juniper Networks has extended Voice Application Level Gateways, previously available only for the H323 protocol, to the Session Initiation Protocol. ALGs are key components in ensuring calls are placed securely and reliably by enabling packet voice traffic to pass through firewalls. These new features complement Juniper Networks’ existing VoIP offerings including enhanced MPLS traffic engineering, voice compression techniques, including Compressed Real Time Protocol (cRTP), flow monitoring and port mirroring.

"Juniper Networks is committed to delivering solutions that transform best-effort quality into assured experiences. This is a cornerstone of our Infranet initiative," commented Adam Judd, vice president, Asia Pacific for Juniper Networks. "The J-Voice portfolio, with its network resilient features, provides a solid foundation for carriers looking to deliver differentiated, carrier-grade VoIP services with the quality and assurance their customers require."
