NORTH SYDNEY, June 7th, 2004 – Despite the growing availability of high-speed wireless networks and an expanding range of data-capable mobile devices, Australian businesses are not taking full advantage of wireless technology, and voice remains the wireless "killer app," making up the bulk of mobile service spending. IDC's latest study titled Australian Business Mobile and Wireless Usage and Preference, 2004: Are We There Yet? also finds that the vast majority of companies in this country have a lukewarm attitude towards the importance of the emerging 3G technology to their business operations.
"Encouraging signs of businesses taking wireless technology to the next level are fast emerging, however. We are seeing much more phones being used for business purposes. We are also witnessing rising corporate WLAN deployment, impressive adoption rates for converged devices and smartphones, and very strong intentions to turn SMS and MMS into business tools, and to mobilise "second wave" applications, like CRM, workforce and sales force automation, ," said Warren Chaisatien, IDC Australia's Senior Analyst for Mobile and Wireless Solutions "
IDC projects that business users will be the primary growth engine of Australia's cellular market for the next five years, with price affordability and predictability playing a key role in driving wireless data usage. Improved economic and business climates are also putting wireless back on the corporate front burner, sending mobile and wireless projects as one of the top ten technology investment priorities by Australian companies.
Based on IDC's annual survey of Australian business telecom decision makers, the study examines businesses' spending on cellular voice and non-voice services, mobile device usage, preferred wireless service providers, critical carrier attributes and churn. The study also probes adoptions of wireless LAN and public hotspot services, as well as IT spending patterns on wireless projects.
