Marist College Ashgrove deploys NetApp unified storage system for improved content delivery and simplified data management; Eliminates back-up ‘nightmare’
Network Appliance Inc., a leading provider of enterprise network storage solutions, has announced that the Marist College Ashgrove, Queensland has deployed a NetApp unified storage system to simplify data management and improve content delivery for staff and students.
Marist College Ashgrove began in 1940 with 70 students. Since then, the school has expanded and today accommodates 1,500 students. The college has installed a NetApp FAS250* unified storage system to support 500 desktops and 1,800 users.
The FAS250 is designed for NAS and/or iSCSI SAN environments. The FAS250 offers customers the same affordability, scalability and simplicity as standard Ethernet networking to create a low cost, high performance storage area network (SAN). The NetApp system deployed by the college utilises fast Fibre Channel in conjunction with the NetApp Data ONTAP™ operating system, the iSCSI protocol and NetApp SnapRestore software. It provides one terabyte of storage capacity and replaces a server-based storage system.
John Lee, IT Manager, Marist College Ashgrove said the key objectives of the implementation were to improve scalability, data management and content delivery.
“We were having problems with bottlenecking at the servers. Students and staff were being inconvenienced and backups were a nightmare and slow. We knew what the problem was but had no idea what to do about it.”
“When a representative from ASI Solutions came and saw me, my ears pricked up when he started to talk about Network Appliance and the benefits Data ONTAP,” he said.
One of the key factors in choosing Network Appliance was that the storage system was able to meet these objectives while keeping costs within the budget restraints of the college.
“Traditionally, our solution was to add more servers,” Mr Lee said. “When the network reached around the 500 desktop mark, the servers began to constantly bottleneck. I had heard of SAN before and I had fears it would be too expensive for the college to afford. With NetApp this simply wasn’t the case.”
“Previously multimedia students needed to run large files from their local hard disks. Now they can be stored on the system. The speed and performance of the NetApp system was exactly what the network needed,” he said.
Mr Lee stated that NetApp SnapRestore was a critical factor in the schools purchasing decision. SnapRestore software allows an organisation to recover data almost instantly. In seconds, SnapRestore can recover anything from an individual file to a multi-terabyte volume.
“Snapshot copies are taken automatically every hour on the hour from 9am to 3pm, with each copy kept for 24 hours. Additional snapshot copies taken nightly are kept for seven-days and a weekly snapshot is stored for 4 weeks,” he said. “ When we need to recover data, snapshots make it incredibly simple for us – there’s no going back to tape now.”
Network Appliance reseller ASI Business Solutions installed the NetApp system. Peter Black, Queensland Branch Manager, ASI Solutions said, “Together with Network Appliance we are making real inroads into the education sector. Solutions like those from NetApp help schools overcome many of the performance issues traditionally associated with school computer networks. Staff and teachers can enjoy faster and more reliable access to information ensuring a better learning environment.”
“NetApp systems such as the FAS250 enable organisations to overcome the competing goals of needing to drive more applications and traffic through their network while keeping infrastructure and operating costs to a minimum,” said Simon Green, Network Appliance Managing Director, Australia and New Zealand.
*The FAS250 recently won Australian Technology & Business Magazine’s coveted Editor’s Choice Award.
