SYDNEY, Australia, 24 August 2004 -- Enterprise Web leader Plumtree Software today published the first comprehensive survey of enterprise Web deployments at Australian organisations.
The survey results indicate that the average Australian organisation has deployed an enormous number of Web applications, averaging 82 applications per respondent, and expects to have deployed 121 Web applications in twelve months time.
Nearly two-thirds (65%) of organisations have implemented Web services technology, with three quarters (75%) expecting to have done so within two years time and the remainder (25%) still uncertain.
"We're seeing exponential growth in Web applications," said Dean Stockwell, Plumtree's Managing Director, Asia Pacific Region. "Almost all new development is being done on a Web deployment platform. Sooner or later organisations will have so many Web applications they will face significant challenges managing them.
"A scaleable and robust portal framework allows organisations to manage an array of Web applications in a heterogeneous environment and is the key component of any enterprise Web strategy," said Stockwell. "Organisations that have already made the investment are seeing the benefits of rapidly deploying and maintaining lower-cost composite business applications in a dynamic, personalised and secure Web environment."
The survey reveals significant fragmentation of development and deployment platforms and content storage repositories. The average Australian organisation supports over four (4.1) development languages, between two and three (2.4) application servers and nearly three (2.8) content storage repositories.
"These results support the wisdom of deploying portal frameworks which are independent from any one application server, repository or packaged application," said Stockwell. "While IBM, Microsoft and SAP envision organisations consolidating all Web applications around a single type of application server, our survey reveals that this really isn't an option for most organisations."
Organisations report numerous challenges in their ability to manage Web applications. The ability to achieve a Single Sign-on for Web applications and sites challenges eight in ten (80%) organisations, with seven in ten (70%) challenged by Content Management. Significant numbers of organisations are challenged by Knowledge Management (65%), Process Automation (57%) and Sprawl of Applications (45%).
"The challenges respondents describe in the survey are exactly those that Plumtree seeks to address -- managing a large number of Web applications with software that is radically open to many types of infrastructure," said Stockwell. "The one I find most interesting is sprawl. If 45% of organisations are challenged now by sprawl of applications, what is the figure going to be in two years time?"
Among organisations surveyed, Web applications broadly support an average of five organisational processes. Types of Web applications deployed or planned by a majority of respondents are Knowledge Management (80%), Employee Services (72.5%) and Customer Support (55%).
Other common Web applications deployed or planned include Executive Dashboard (42.5%), Corporate Compliance (32.5%), eGovernment Service (32.5%), Finance (30%), R&D Collaboration (30%) and Risk Management (30%).
Web applications are typically quick to develop, with an average time taken to launch portal frameworks among surveyed organisations of just over 6 months, and with over three quarters (78%) launching within 9 months.
Of organisations surveyed that had determined an ROI, five in six (83%) achieved a positive result for their portal frameworks. Only one in 25 (4%) organisations reported a negative ROI. Among most organisations, process automation / self-service (87.5%), general productivity (75%) and collaboration (62.5%) are factors driving positive ROI.
Despite this, organisations experience significant portal framework deployment challenges. Most organisations surveyed are challenged by developing a vision for their portal frameworks (62%), building enterprise Web applications that deliver real value (60%), and incorporating existing intranets or extranets (52%).
Many organisations identify deficiencies in their current portal frameworks. Deficiencies in process automation (45%), reliable enterprise search (45%), integrating with other systems (41%) and monitoring & management tools (41%) remain significant problems.
"Organisations often don't know where to begin tackling Web application development and management issues," said Stockwell. "Most need assistance from companies like Plumtree which understand and have extensive experience implementing enterprise Web projects. The most important element, and often the most time-consuming one, is to understand the non-technical aspects of the problem. This is more about business consulting and analysis of user requirements than it is about what you can do with the technology."
Plumtree surveyed 40 IT executives from organisations attending the recent Corporate Portal World Australia conference in Sydney during May 2004 about their experiences with enterprise Web and portal framework technologies.
The organisations surveyed were mostly large and medium-sized. Some 44% had annual revenues in excess of $1 billion, 42% had revenues of between 10 million and 999 million, and 15% had revenues of less than $10 million a year.
