NetApp LockVault software provides unified backup and compliance; complete protection for unstructured data
Network Appliance, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTAP), the leader in advanced networked storage solutions, has announced the release of a new software product, LockVault. LockVault comprehensively addresses data retention in a secure and cost-effective manner. LockVault delivers powerful backup, disaster recovery and data permanence capabilities for unstructured data, enabling customers to address both backup and compliance challenges with a single comprehensive solution.
Unstructured data can account for more than 50 per cent of enterprise data. In most customer settings this type of data is in constant flux because files are continually created, modified and moved, making it difficult to manage within a typical enterprise. LockVault provides fast, efficient and secure archived storage for this growing customer challenge and is designed to help enterprises meet stringent data storage regulations, including regulations mandated by U.S.-SEC Rule 17a-4.
Easy to implement and manage, LockVault eliminates the need to continuously identify data in spreadsheet, presentation or homegrown file formats that might fall under regulatory jurisdiction. Instead, LockVault permits permanent, ongoing, unstructured data backup by copying and storing only the unique blocks of data that have been written since the most recent incremental backup. Every variation is protected, so no data falls through the cracks and any backup image can be immediately verified, rapidly searched, indexed or recovered and cannot be edited or deleted until its specified expiration date. The NetApp Compliance Journal provides an unalterable audit trail to guarantee the authenticity of all secure backups. With online disk-based, compliant backups of unstructured data from multiple points in time, LockVault enables customers to manage and protect all their unstructured data, utilising best practice full retention while minimising risk.
“With the introduction of LockVault, NetApp is providing a solution that enables compliance for all types of data - structured, semi-structured and unstructured - based on a single architecture. Companies can now leverage the same infrastructure to meet both their backup and compliance requirements,” said Peter Gerr, Analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group. “Archiving unstructured data is a growing and complex challenge for enterprises today. Not only does LockVault provide procedural and operational benefits, but it provides tangible cost savings, as well. Simplifying backup while at the same time addressing compliance requirements is a win-win for customers.” As with all NetApp products and solutions based on a unified operating system, LockVault is tightly integrated with NetApp SnapMirror software to fully support WORM-to-WORM remote replication. LockVault is fully compatible with Windows, UNIX or Linux data residing on any NetApp system.
“Addressing regulatory compliance and protecting valuable and sensitive information doesn't need to be any more complex than it already is,” said Patrick Rogers, Vice President of Marketing at Network Appliance. “Our widespread success in providing solutions for data permanence and data security proves this. With LockVault we unify compliance with backup and disaster recovery for all types of data with a single, comprehensive solution that minimises risk for our customers.”
