NETGEAR®, Inc. (NASDAQGM: NTGR), a worldwide provider of technologically advanced, branded networking solutions, has launched a new recycling program in Australia that gives its customers a quick and easy way to dispose of their old networking equipment, free of charge.
Any customer purchasing a new NETGEAR product can send their old product – irrespective of brand – to NETGEAR’s recycling service, at no cost. Having made their purchase, customers should visit NETGEAR’s website to complete a form with the purchase details, and then print out an auto-generated, postage-paid, return address label. NETGEAR is also working with Australia Post to produce pre-addressed, postage-paid pouches which will be available from resellers. The program is being run in conjunction with Thiess Services, one of Australia’s leading waste management organisations.
“How many times have you read about a ‘green’ initiative that was full of promises but very little action?” asks Ryan Parker, Managing Director, NETGEAR Australia. “Well, this is a green initiative that’s actually worth talking about.
“Working with Thiess Services, we’ve been able to remove one of the main barriers to inaction when it comes to responsible recycling – cost. There’s no catch: the recycled equipment doesn’t even have to be NETGEAR-branded. The only qualification is a new NETGEAR purchase to replace the old equipment, and we do the rest.”
“Many people are concerned about the amount of waste generated by the purchase and use of IT but almost every part of an electronic peripheral can be recycled – in fact we are generally able to recycle 95 to 98 per cent of electronic waste,” says Tony Calleja, E-Recycling Manager, Thiess Services. “Once the waste is collected it is separated into its various material parts. Plastics, aluminium, steel parts and cables are easily recycled, and this is done locally. Some printed circuit boards are sent overseas to be recycled in accordance with international guidelines and conventions.”
Thiess Services handled more than 150,000 tonnes of recyclables in New South Wales, ACT and Queensland in 2007, and this figure will be close to 200,000 tonnes in 2008. It has a dedicated e-recycling facility that guarantees a high level of recycling of electronic materials, reducing the amount of heavy metals such as lead, phosphorus, mercury, selenium and cadmium and other resources like ferrous metals, aluminium, brass and plastics that is being buried in landfill.
As part of an ongoing effort, called NETGEAR Green, NETGEAR has pledged to monitor the volume and composition of recycled equipment and report back to the community on the benefit to the environment. NETGEAR Green has recently seen the company achieve Energy Star® Level IV efficiency and become an Energy Star® Partner – nearly a full year ahead of US government regulations. NETGEAR has also complied with the European Union’s Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive, which limits the use of hazardous substances such as lead, cadmium and mercury, to make the company more environmentally friendly in all areas of production, including packaging volume and materials.
“We’ve taken a holistic view of the environmental impact of our business – from the materials used in designing and developing our products, to the materials used to package and sell them,” Parker says. “NETGEAR believes a company’s responsibility for its product does not end when it leaves the factory floor.
