Leading international technology-based services and solutions provider selects Micro Focus testing and management solutions to improve software delivery and enhance team collaboration

QinetiQ to improve business value by transforming software delivery into a managed, efficient and predictable business process

Micro Focus® (LSE.MCRO.L), a leading provider of Enterprise Application Modernisation, Testing and Management solutions, today announces that QinetiQ, a leading international provider of technology-based services and solutions to the defence, security and related markets, is deploying applications testing and management solutions from Borland Software Corporation (a Micro Focus Company) to help increase efficiency, performance and control over its entire software delivery process.

QinetiQ has deployed the company’s applications management solutions including StarTeam for complete software change and configuration management (SCCM) and CaliberRM for software requirements management, to increase visibility, collaboration and knowledge-sharing across the organisation and to help ensure clearly defined and tightly managed software projects. It is also utilising the company’s software testing tools, SilkTest, for automated functional and regression testing and SilkCentral Test Manager for test management.

QinetiQ’s implementation of the solutions and its more holistic approach to software delivery have helped improve the productivity of its development teams and reduced project start-up costs and rework. It is projecting a productivity and efficiency improvement during the initial phase of the software delivery transformation project, with significant improvements expected as the implementation is rolled out more widely. This should not only enable efficient compliance with the CMMI standard, but also strengthen its competitiveness by enhancing its ability to meet requirements predictably, on time and to budget.

One of QinetiQ’s key challenges has been to better exploit its library of software created by its dispersed development teams. This had at times been problematic because various project teams used an assortment of different tools, repositories and approaches, making the coordination and collection of its developed applications a complex and time consuming process. QinetiQ recognised the need for a more integrated, consistent and predictable approach for its software delivery projects and is implementing the new solutions as part of an ongoing transformation of software delivery into a managed business process.

By providing a standard solution across the main QinetiQ networks, the software development tools reduce the effort required on projects to adopt good working practice. When staff transfer from one project to another, the same consistent working practices can be adopted, saving on the effort needed to learn new tools and techniques. What’s more, the software development tools and associated training have increased awareness of good configuration management and requirements management practice within QinetiQ. With a standard way to work on a project, discussions on how best to proceed are minimised, improving project efficiency significantly as the bulk of efforts can be directed towards the true objectives of the project.

Prior to the rollout, managing change requests, problem reports and tasks during software development was a significant overhead. With change management now built into the development toolset, this is no longer the case.
