Meridian Energy has selected Vodafone as its preferred supplier of telecommunications services.

NZX-listed Meridian selected the telecommunications giant to provide full support services including data, voice and mobility after a fourteen-month bidding process that started last May.

The result is a four-year deal worth up to $16 million, with potential for extension, Vodafone said today.

"We’re delighted to have been selected to work with Meridian," said Vodafone CEO Russell Stanners. "We know telecommunications is a critical part of their business and look forward to supporting their growth ambition in New Zealand’s regulated electricity environment.

"We’re focused on helping Meridian maximise its business performance and operate even more efficiently."

Meanwhile, Meridian CEO Neal Barclay said the agreement will see the company deploy new networking technologies that improve resilience at many of its sites.

"Telecommunications is our lifeline and we’re looking forward to enhancing some of our key services," he said. "It’s great to be working with our new partner Vodafone."

Meridian's tender said it requires robust telecommunications services to undertake its role as a Lifeline Utility as defined under the Civil Defence Emergency Management Act 2002.

"These services are also critical in terms of Meridian's ability to operate as a major electricity generator and wholesale trader in New Zealand's regulated environment," it said. "Key components of Meridian's telecommunications network requires 24/7 x 365 support."

The transition from Meridian’s current provider is already underway.
