ICT sales growth is robust in New Zealand

Statistics New Zealand's latest ICT supply numbers indicate local markets for software and services are strong, especially the market for cloud services.

Sales of ICT software and services were worth $7.4 billion in 2017, Stats NZ said, 17 per cent more than in the last survey, conducted in 2014.

That growth was made to look small, however, compared with sales of hosting and IT infrastructure provisioning services, which rose a whopping 84 per cent to $1.6 billion.

Hosting and IT infrastructure was 28 per cent of the total sales of IT services, up from 18 per cent in 2014. Stats NZ said the increase reflects the trend towards cloud-hosting services.

Traditional published software was 25 per cent of the value of all sales of ICT services and software, meanwhile, sales of IT services increased 16 per cent to $5.6 billion.

Exports of IT services was 11 per cent of the total sales of ICT software and services in 2017, up from 9 per cent in 2014.

Sales of IT technical support, however, were down 6 per cent to $1.88 billion. While export sales in the same category rose 49 per cent to $153 million local sales fell 9 per cent to $1.72 billion.

Stats NZ's Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Supply Survey was reduced in size and coverage in 2017 to exclude sales of ICT goods and communication services and other ICT services.

The survey measures the sale of goods and services from businesses associated with ICT industries.
