Canon Shine competition winner announced

“Disconnect to reconnect” by Julie Kerbel has been chosen as the winner of the Canon Shine photography competition.
The winning photo was selected out of 50 other photos initially short listed by popular vote.
Kerbel said the message of the photo was for people to “unplug” from their screens and explore the world.
“There's a whole world out there to be discovered and we are too busy with our heads down in devices to see it,” she said.
Canon Australia consumer imaging director, Jason McLean, said images were judged for their unique perspective, the power to stop people in their tracks, and whether its backstory will resonate with all of Australia.
“We have been overwhelmed by the powerful stories and the common themes revealed in people’s photos,” he said.
“The winner makes us stop and reflect on a modern-day issue for all of us.”
In addition to promoting the winning entry via a national advertising campaign and short film, the photo and top 50 entries will be showcased at the NSW State Library running from July 8 to September 14.
Many different viewpoints
Canon received more than 2000 photographs for the competition, and McLean said it was from people from “all walks of life.”
Participants were asked to show what matters to them most in their photos, and a common theme that emerged was the importance of human connection.
Other popular themes included the need to care for the nature and wildlife that we share this planet with, human strength and resilience, and discovering beauty in the everyday.
McLean said the competition was a response to the overload of trivial ‘life logging’ photography that is commonplace today.
“It was leaving many to search for greater authenticity and was actually diluting the power of images to make a difference in our lives,” he said.
