Seagate is now shipping what it says is the world’s fastest nearline 6TB drive for Cloud-based data centres.
Nearline hard disk drives (HDDs) are an intermediate type of storage that represent a compromise between readily accessed storage and archives.
Seagate vice president of marketing, Scott Horn, said unstructured data growth is doubling exponentially, and digital storage will reach 16 zettabytes (16 Billion terabytes) as early as 2017. Cloud service providers will search for ways to store more using existing footprints, while lowering operational costs.
“Seagate is poised to address this challenge by offering the fastest 6TB enterprise capacity HDD based on our proven, reliable platform meeting this never-ending demand in both private and public cloud data centers.”
It claims its new drive offers performance that is up to 25 per cent better than its competitors.
The company said the enterprise capacity 3.5 HDD v4 features the fastest performance available for a nearline HDD. It claims the drive employs the latest generation of 12Gb/s statistical analysis software, and gives customers scalability for future-proofing their systems.
Seagate says the drive is purpose built for enterprise environments. It uses T10 and T13-compliant power management standards, which it says allows organisations to tailor their systems for energy use, and that this will result in up to 90 per cent power savings.
