Content delivery company no longer sees the Internet being just about entertainment

Akamai has seen the Internet come a long way from simply being used to access files on linked computers.

25 years ago, the World Wide Web started out as a technical paper by European computer scientist, Tim Berners-Lee.

Now it has grown to be a mission critical tool for businesses and transformed the way people around the world live and socialise.

Initially dubbed as the “information super highway,” Akamai APJ regional vice president, Malcolm Rowe, said the Internet of today is very different from its original state.

“When it was launched, it was an entertainment and communication medium,” he said.

“Since then we’ve seen the evolution of online businesses, service providers and specialist organisations for the Internet.”

Rowe said the most significant shift over the last 25 years was the shift from merely offering entertainment and gaming to becoming a business and social networking platform.

There are approximately 100 million web sites globally and Rowe said there are billions of search requests made daily to search engines.

Over the last five years, the global Internet user base has grown from 1.3 to 2.4 billion.

While these may seem like already impressive numbers, Rowe said it is just the tip of the iceberg.

“The current usage is only one in five people, so it’s a fraction of the total potential of the Internet,” he said.

“We’ve come a long way, but we are at the beginning of the journey than at the end of it.”
