Radiola snaps Samsung

CHANGING market conditions have seen the NZ distribution rights for Samsung digital still cameras switch from photography specialist CR Kennedy to Radiola.
Radiola is already the main importer and agent for Samsung’s consumer and IT products. Steve Maguiness, group manager consumer products at Radiola, says the move came about mainly because digital cameras are increasingly being sold by electrical appliance stores rather than photographic stores.
“We’ve been the sole distributor for Samsung’s consumer electronics products since 1993 - we handle everything from whiteware to televisions. In fact, the only things we didn’t handle were the digital still cameras and mobile phones - which go through Telecom,” he says. Maguiness says Radiola can push the digital cameras through three distinct channels: IT resellers, traditional appliance retailers and photographic outlets, “The trend is that appliance stores are now picking up the bulk of this market.”
Robert Jelas, managing director of CR Kennedy, says his company has worked with Samsung for 16 years and while its digital cameras represented a significant proportional of his company’s business, the margins were slim.
