CommArc’s Cantabs Cisco country champs

BREAKING out of their Southern Man mould, a group of Cantabrians have pipped their fellows from the North Island in a top technical contest.

CommArc Consulting’s Cantabs team won the New Zealand leg of Cisco’s Tech Mastermind competition and will represent the country at the Asia-Pacific final of the contest in Perth next month.

“We are pretty proud to have a winner from the South Island and to beat some of the gurus up there in the North,” says David Barron, general manager of CommArc.

“The win signifies the emphasis we place on training and the overall competence of our team. It proves we have the right team and are very technically focused.”

The Cantabs consist of Cisco engineers David Baird and Simon Thomas, but Barron says they had the backing of the entire CommArc staff, especially Mike Fowler who was the unofficial third member of the team.

As New Zealand winners of the country round of the competition, which was an open book, online contest, the team is being flown to Perth to take part in the regional Tech Mastermind round during Cisco’s Asia-Pacific Business Partner Summit. Here, the semi and grand finals will be contested, live on stage.

In addition to being crowned Tech Mastermind 2005, each member of the winning team will also claim two million Channel Rewards points - worth US$3,500 (NZ$4,770).

Even if the Cantabs do not clinch the big prize, Barron reckons taking part is well worth the effort for the knowledge gained.

“We look forward to putting what we have learnt into practice,” he says.
