Go Direct’s vanishing act

THE apparent closure of a Christchurch distributor has raised concerns over warranty support for the products it supplied.
Go Direct had distributed Daewoo monitors since March 2003 and even supplied the former Ingram Micro before it merged with Tech Pacific, but investigations by Reseller News have uncovered no evidence of the company still trading.
While the firm is still registered with the Companies Office, its website, telephone numbers and email addresses aren’t active.
Former customers and rivals also report the company has gone quiet.
Glenn Cousins of Christchurch reseller Geek In Your House first alerted Reseller News to the situation.
Cousins says when he was last at Go Direct in the first week of April, owner and operator Mark Slattery was trying to get rid of everything in sight.
“I bought a few things. It didn’t look like they were going to be around much longer,” says Cousins.
According to Cousins, Go Direct originally had some good things going for it, such as directly importing cases from China, which were decent and much cheaper than anywhere else, but even-tually appeared to lose focus.
“They had a display case full of products when I first opened an account, but one by one things disappeared and never came back in stock,” he says.
“For some reason they decided to change their focus and began selling a bit of everything. I was quite perplexed to see them selling packs of animal toys and large garden gnomes next to the motherboards and CD writers.”
Cousins stopped dealing with Go Direct a while ago.
“I wanted to buy from a company with a tech focus. They just became an importer with no particular desire to serve the IT sector,” he says.
Cousins is concerned over who is responsible for warranty service on the Daewoo products Go Direct supplied in New Zealand.
So is Desmond Ling, marketing manager at Ingram Micro, who says Ingram used to be a sub-distributor of Daewoo products, but quit the range some time back.
Ling says while Ingram will support the products it has sold, of which there weren’t many, he doesn’t know who will back the rest.
Attempts to reach Mark Slattery through Polson Higgs, the Christchurch chartered accountants and business advisors listed as Go Direct’s registered office, were also unsuccessful.
No evidence could be found of other companies which were registered by Slattery operating either, including Bigbox, Eurasia Trading and Pico Productions, which has a website.
Information on the site suggests the firm offers promotional product design and marke-ting, glassware, ceramics, “Bullyland” figurines and importation management, but no further details are displayed, other than contact details which are inactive, and a message stating the site is under construction. In an earlier interview with Reseller News, Slattery said Go Direct was founded in 2001, but only started trading in March 2003. He also said he scoured the factory floors of hardware manufacturers overseas to offer resellers a cost-effective source of high-quality computer equipment.
