For young women in the predominantly male IT industry getting ahead can be a real challenge, but Women in Technology (WIT) is trying to help smooth the path through its mentoring programme, Accelerate.
The year-long programme sees WIT members teamed with a mentor - usually a senior practitioner in the IT industry with either generalist or broad experience.
During monthly meetings the mentor provides guidance, challenges perceptions, offers opinions and acts as a sounding board as issues are raised.
Cheryl Horo, WIT general manager, says the programme was introduced late last year with the help of IBM and the University of Auckland.
Horo points out that the programme isn’t just for women and says there is a high level of interest from men wanting to participate.
She says Accelerate is designed to bring together mentors and mentees in a semi-formal partnership to assist the career of the mentee outside the normal manager to staff member relationship.
