Racy new number from Acer

WITH a carbon fibre body and a dash of dramatic red, Acer’s latest Ferrari-inspired notebook is slightly less ostentatious than its predecessors, but still a racy number.

The new Ferrari 4000 is Acer’s third Ferrari-branded notebook and is the result of a close partnership between the two companies.

Acer has been the official supplier of notebooks, PCs, servers and monitors to the Scuderia Ferrari Formula One team since 2003.

But Acer did not just borrow style and branding from the legendary carmaker — it also learnt a few technical tricks.

The 4000 is wrapped in a carbon fibre skin — a material pioneered in the world of Formula One racing. This is a first in notebook design and provides lightweight durability, says Acer.

Aesthetically the shiny black carbon fibre casing makes for a much more understated machine than the 4000’s attention-grabbing, bright Ferrari-red ancestors, the Ferrari 3000 and 3400.

However, a racy red trim and the iconic Prancing Horse emblem on the cover undoubtedly stamp Ferrari style on the machine.

A soft-touch coating around the keyboard and on the included wireless Bluetooth mouse adds another touch of luxury to the notebook.

In keeping with the racing theme, the 4000 is driven by a high-performance AMD 64-bit Turion processor.

Graphics are powered by an ATI Mobility Radeon X700 graphics chip set with 128MB DDR memory on a 15.4-inch TFT widescreen display.

The 4000 also features a slot-loading DVD-Super double-layer reader and burner and a five-in-one card reader.

The Acer Ferrari is available in two models: the 4000WLMi with 512MB of memory and a 80GB hard drive, retailing at $3,229; and the 4005WLMi with 1GB memory and a 100GB hard drive at $4,199.
