Canon cuts jobs - consumer marketing moves to Aus

Canon is making four local positions redundant as it moves the marketing for its consumer products to Australia.
The roles to be cut include the overall national marketing manager position held by Gary Walker.
Although a new marketing manager role for Canon’s consumer products will be created, strategic decision making for their marketing will shift to Australia.
Marketing for business lines will now be separate from consumer marketing and will continue to be managed by Craig Manson.
Walker says the move comes as Canon looks to cut costs due to lower hardware prices.
“It is the right decision in terms of the evolution of the market. Margins are dropping and prices on products like digital cameras are so low now,” he says.
“Using the resources already in place in Australia where they have more marketing funds and materials makes sense.”
Walker says advertising for consumer products has become commiditised removing the need to develop marketing materials especially for New Zealand.
Walker has worked for Canon New Zealand for nearly eight years and spent as long at the company’s South African subsidiary.
He has not finalised his future plans yet.
