EMC invites SAP channel to archive

STORAGE giant EMC is bringing its archiving software to SAP users and in doing so presents new opportunities for the channel.

Clive Gold, EMC product manager, says that until now there has been no way to archive SAP database information.

Through the use of backup and replication tools, a database extender for SAP R/3 and SAP certification of EMC’s Centera platform, Gold says information can be stored and retrieved easily thereby speeding up the efficiency of databases.

“For a start these tools have to be integrated into the customer’s SAP environment. This is open to both EMC and SAP partners and I imagine the latter will be looking beyond implementation to extend into archive policies,” says Gold.

He believes it’s up to the channel to help customers set up archiving policies and procedures and says that should be of interest to system integrators and business-oriented resellers.

For EMC the extension to include SAP is a continuation of its intelligent lifecycle management strategy that sees applications and infrastructure converge.

“This has been available to Oracle customers for quite some time.

“I imagine SAP will view this as an underlying technology but this rollout has definite benefits for its channel partners.”

Yet Tim Woolfield, Realtech managing director, says many organisations see archiving as purely about saving disk space and the benefits of an integrated archiving solution are seldom seen as justification for doing it.

“A lot of people don’t see the need for it so it’s a bit of a hard sell. From a partner perspective I would be extremely interested but it needs a lot of education on the customer side,” he says.
