Axon wins large PC deal at troubled Te Wananga

ONE of the year’s biggest desktop deals so far has gone to Axon, which is supplying embattled tertiary provider Te Wananga o Aotearoa with around 2,000 Lenovo PCs.
Axon won the contract in a competitive tender and has already supplied the wananga with the first shipment of machines.
The PCs are for the wananga’s Virtual Learning Centre, which offers campus and home-based courses. Students are provided with a computer, software and internet access at home.
The deal is estimated to be worth at least $3 million and comes as management of the tertiary provider is under scrutiny. The institution is currently the subject of an investigation by the auditor general amid allegations of mismanagement and nepotism.
Because of this situation the wananga has declined to comment on the deal, while Axon is also not willing to make specific comments.
However, responding to questions from Reseller News, Axon general manager for marketing Scott Green confirmed Axon won the contract.
While not confirming the exact number of PCs to be supplied, Green says the 2,000 figure is about right.
This is not Axon’s first engagement with the wananga, as it has previously provided software and services to the institution, says Green.
It is also not Lenovo’s first deal with the organisation.
The wananga was a customer while Lenovo was still part of IBM, says country manager Karen Vincent.
Winning such a sizeable deal confirms that customers are comfortable with the change to Lenovo, she says.
“A lot of customers have remained with us, which is very positive.”
Both Vincent and Liam Gunson, hardware analyst at research firm IDC, confirm this is one of the largest desktop deals in the country this year.
Axon’s latest win comes after it was chosen by Mighty River Power as the preferred partner to upgrade its IT infrastructure and as it completed the handover of its desktop services outsourcing contract at Air New Zealand.
Axon is taking over operational desktop service and support responsibility at the company in a contract it won off Gen-i in February.
