Partnership on services frees engineers

Five resellers trialled ‘Ingram Micro Services by Divers Group’ services prior to launch.
Performance IT director Craig Sutton, a trialist, says the services are reasonably priced and meant his company could focus on its more profitable core services.
“It doesn’t make sense to use engineers’ time to re-image workstations,” he says. “The main driver is we can focus on where we make more revenue, than having engineers running up generic machines.”
At its South Auckland warehouse, Ingram Micro has provided a dedicated configuration centre for Divers Group staff to work from. If a reseller requires pre-delivery services, a product code is added to stock so it can be directed to Divers’ staff for customisation.
“It’s a service, but it’s packaged as a product,” Bigwood says. “Resellers still charge for it and make margin on it like anything else.”
“For instance, when a reseller orders a Desktop PC and a RAM module, they can choose to have the RAM installed in the machine by Divers Group prior to delivery for just $10. Traditionally, they would have had to pay for freight on both items and still had to install and configure the RAM post-delivery.”
Services include asset tracking (via a label or the BIOS), software imaging for servers, workstations and laptops (as provided by the reseller or the end user), BIOS configuration, hardware upgrades and testing, and complete hardware builds. Tailored quotes for services not listed are also available.
Bigwood says Ingram Micro clients are positive about the partnership, as they have already used Divers Group for customisation services.
Divers Group general manager Bill McKinnon says about three major vendors and about five large resellers have used his company’s customisation services in the 15 or so years they’ve been available. He says the company will now be able to reach some smaller resellers.
“Currently our model doesn’t allow us the extensive coverage Ingram can give us. Our business to date has been around the vendors and the larger resellers, but now we could get a better number of resellers.”
