Turnstone eyes niche in telco space

Managed network services provider Turnstone hopes to gain a niche in the local market with the launch of its converged business network last month. Turnstone envisions the network to set it apart from other service providers in the industry.
Using a high speed fibre backbone that runs through Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, Turnstone offers integrated voice, data, security, video messaging and other telecommunications services over a managed data network.
Catering to small and medium businesses, Turnstone claims to provide competitively priced voice over internet protocol (VoIP) and data services with full Quality of Service (QoS), which provides better service to selected network traffic.
According to director Barbara Smith, this embodies the main selling point of Turnstone’s offering.
The growing market for integrated telco services, especially among small and medium enterprises in need of such services, prompted Turnstone to turn on the key and go for a niche in the market, says Smith.
“Previously these businesses had not easily been able to invest in a custom designed call and data network. Hence we designed our converged business network. Where other companies offered parts of a solution, our aim was for Turnstone to offer ‘one solution, one standard, one bill from one company.’”
Smith believes New Zealand offers a wide array of business opportunities in the telco market, particularly in the use of VoIP as a technology platform.
“The New Zealand market has now matured to the point where there is an acceptance that VoIP technology is now the industry standard. Adoption rates are starting to climb, and there is a demand in the marketplace for a product that encompasses better productivity, flexibility, cost savings, customer service and support,” says Smith.
“We believe there is a niche in the telco market, which Turnstone addresses in a way that is currently different from other offerings. We are able to offer personalised service and we become our clients' single supplier for lines, tolls, data and support.”
With Turnstone, customers can enjoy a custom built network, at a competitive price, one which can be enhanced as their company grows and changes, says Smith.
“Our customers have one point of contact with us and we are able to manage their system remotely for any [addition] or changes they require. There is no longer any need for them to manage a range of telco suppliers and they do not have to spend time sitting on hold while waiting to speak to someone at a call centre.”
The benefits that businesses can reap from Turnstone’s converged business network are tangible, says Smith.
“Customers can see increased productivity gains that arise from Turnstone's combination of advanced technology and custom services. These include quicker access to information from QoS WAN, little or no downtime, one centralised operator to handle all sites, full visibility of all users for the operator, unified messaging and call recording for dispute resolution and training,” says Smith.
Turnstone has employed Cisco technology throughout its own network, and the customer solutions are standardised based on Cisco products.
Turnstone has also invested heavily in developing and testing the product prior to its launch and its rollout plan has already commenced, with major points of presence in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. The company is able to put online business customers in these areas and other major centres, says Smith.
Since Turnstone does not deal in the residential market, its customers have priority in its network, which provides them with the best Quality of Service available.
