Purpose-built SME storage from Hitachi

Hitachi Data Systems says partners now have increased service and support opportunities thanks to its new Simple Modular Storage (SMS) 100 product that is designed for small and medium businesses.
HDS says it took a consumer-electronics approach with the SMS 100, building it specifically for smaller firms rather than modifying an enterprise product. It provides a wizard-based graphical user interface and auto-configuration software for fast and easy set-up.
Both partners and customers can manage disaster recovery through an icon-based console.
“We’ve been working with partners on disaster recovery and remote backup and consultancy around best practice on data management,” says ANZ channels manager Kerstin Baxter.
“We’ve focused on the system being low cost and simple, as it enables customers to focus on their business.”
The vendor has recently run a partner roadshow event in Auckland and has set up a new SME portal for partners and customers to get information about the product.
Baxter says HDS is looking for more partners to help it take the SMS 100 to market.
“These are SME specialists rather than storage experts and may be people who are already doing some remote management.”
It has no special power requirements and scales from one to nine terabytes.
If a customer upgrades their system, existing data and licensing are automatically copied to the new product.
Hitachi Data Systems will also send a new drive in the event of disk failure, which is placed in a spare slot and the failed drive powered down and left in the system.
HDS has pre-configured eight system models, ranging from about $7500 to $17,000.
