HP holds on to top spot in PC sales

HP is still the number one PC vendor in the third quarter of this year, according to the latest preliminary local market share figures from research firm IDC.

In the last quarter HP extended its lead slightly to 37.6 percent of the market, up 1.6 percent from the previous period.

The top five vendor positions were virtually unchanged, with Acer continuing to hold on to second place. IDC senior hardware analyst Liam Gunson says this is due to Acer’s strength in the consumer notebook market. “Acer continues to increase its notebook shipments.” Dell, Toshiba and Lenovo round out the top five in that order.

HP is dominant in the laptops and desktop markets, due to its strength in the consumer market, says Gunson. The company has a 30.6 percent share of the desktop market, down from 34 percent in quarter two, but increased its share of laptops to 43.5 percent, up from 37.9 percent.

Acer is at number two in the laptop market, while Dell managed to hold on to the second spot in desktops.

Growth in the mobile market was strongest in quarter three, with four percent more units shipped than in quarter two and year-on-year growth of 19 percent.

The desktop market had year-on-year growth of 2.3 percent. The consumer PC sector grew 3.6 percent in the past year, while sales of commercial PCs rose by 1.6 percent.
