Samsung launches charity initiative

Samsung Electronics has launched Samsung Hope, an initiative aimed at improving the lives of disadvantaged children and youth living with serious illness.

The company will partner with CanTeen, KidsCan and Make-a-Wish Foundation to promote the Samsung Hope campaign website, where New Zealanders can determine the distribution of $150,000 in funds donated by Samsung. The charities will receive a share of the funds determined by the number of votes they are given on the website.

People can visit and pledge financial support for their chosen charity from today until 14 February, 2009. The funding pool will be distributed among the three participating charities based on the percentage level of support received.

Each beneficiary will receive a $16,000 base amount, with an additional grant determined by the number of pledges it receives.

Samsung New Zealand's head of sponsorship and marketing, Emma Keen, say the initiative is a continuation of the company's work to address social issues in the Asia Pacific region.

“Digital Hope was launched in 2003 to help bridge the digital divide. The Samsung Hope initiative goes a step further by engaging the community in the decision as to where funding is allocated.”
