NZ resellers offered chance to help World Computer Exchange

Managing director of computer recycler The Ark, Brian Lawrence, is seeking help from resellers and corporates to establish a local chapter of the World Computer Exchange (WCE).
The US-based WCE is a non-profit group that supplies computers, which may otherwise end up in landfills, to youth in developing countries. Its volunteers help send donated PCs to partner organisations, provide technical support and help with installation and training.
The WCE says along with New Zealand, India and Chile are also on its list of possible countries to establish a local chapter.
Lawrence says he has already gained support from Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) students, as the education institute is near The Ark’s headquarters in South Auckland.
The Ark has machines that aren’t suitable for future commercial use here, but these could go to Pacific Island nations not supported by WCE in the US, he says.
“For me the cheapest thing is to recycle some of these, but I think this is the wrong thing to do because these are functional and running XP.”
