Microsoft takes on malware

Microsoft is releasing Security Essentials, a free anti-malware service aimed at consumers, on Wednesday, September 30.

It is built on the same technology as the vendor’s business offering Forefront Client Security.

Windows Client business group manager Ben Green says consumers wanted the protection of real-time security software but many weren’t willing to pay for it. By making the software free, the vendor plans to encourage more adoption of anti-virus protection across its consumer audience.

Security Essentials is available for Windows XP SP2/ SP3, Vista and 7. New Zealand is one of 19 countries to get the software.
