Pingar relaunches with new approach

Tauranga-based data search product vendor Pingar has relaunched with a new product and a new distribution model.

The company has switched from selling “boxed” versions of its search technology to distributing APIs through its website.

“We’ve been speaking to our global partners for the past six to 12 months about how we deliver our technology,” says CEO and co-founder Peter Wren-Hilton. “The strong review we got was rather than release [the search tool] as a product, it would be more valuable to them to release it as a set of components and so we will be able to let vendors build those applications.”

The company, which was founded in 2006, builds “semantic search applications for business enterprises” according to its website, with a focus on culling unstructured data. Software developers will now be able to access APIs for free, develop applications and then apply for an application key for which developers will be charged on a per-usage basis.

“Before we were selling application-focused solutions for Microsoft SharePoint,” says Wren-Hilton. “The feedback we got from potential customers was they would like to build apps around parts of the solution.”

Pingar announced the new rollout at the Microsoft SharePoint conference in Sydney on March 8. It has also announced a major partnership with online services provider and integrator Provoke.

Pingar currently employs 26 people in New Zealand, Hong Kong and the United Kingdom. It is seeking marketing staff, Wren-Hilton says, and plans to open at least one more office in San Francisco. It also plans to rollout a Chinese language version next month.
