Gearing SMBs with enterprise features

Storage vendor Netgear has launched its SMB-focused ReadyData 5200 product into the New Zealand market saying it includes features that, up until now, had only been available to enterprises.
Among the new features, Netgear includes a de-duplication component that the company believes will help SMBs save money while maximising storage capacity. "It's a very powerful feature to have in the SMB space. This one feature alone is exciting for resellers because of what it delivers," said storage product architect Peter Levett during the launch in Auckland.
"We can't credit ourselves too much. We just listened to the channel. They have been asking for this stuff,” he added. “It’s an easier conversation to have with their customers because it’s one solution solving lots of problems.”
Levett says it is “ignorant” to cut features out of enterprise-class products and sell them to SMBs. “They still want the features, just not the complexity and cost,” he says.
The ReadyData product is part of Netgear’s “Smart IT strategy”, as described by Netgear’s ANZ managing director Ryan Parker. Priced under $10k, Parker describes it as “a very compelling product”.
“We see it as the next generation of storage,” adds Levett. “We took the enterprise features and made it affordable.”
The new product also features instant volume creation and expansion, which Levett describes as "risk free", and thin provisioning, which he says is "ideal for partners providing hosted or cloud based storage to customers".
Netgear is distributed in New Zealand by Ingram Micro, Exeed, and Synnex.
