IP security camera maker Axis Communications says that the conversion from analogue to digital cameras will continue to occur in New Zealand.

The company has prepared for this with its first appointment of a local representative, working out of an office in Wellington. The Wellington location is one of two new offices the company opened in the region, in anticipation of demand on both sides of the Tasman.

“Most of the market today is still dominated by analogue cameras,” says Wai King Wong, Axis country manager for Oceania. “And New Zealand is on the verge of changing over, and the market has been moving this for us for the last few years with 30 percent year-on-year growth. We definitely, without a doubt needed someone locally to manage the business as it grows bigger and bigger.”

Thus the company appointed Sargon Youssef as regional sales manager.

Youssef has been in the security industry for 12 years, according to a statement released by Axis, with experience in alarm and high-end access control systems. He started as a technician in 1999 and his last role was a technical/business development manager for ADT. Youssef holds NZQA Security Installer accreditation and is also an accredited workplace assessor.

Wong says the company has 1500 resellers in the region, with about 300 in New Zealand. The goal in the coming year is to expand that base by another ten percent its two-tiered, Silver and Gold partner programme.

“One of the key tasks for Youssef is to develop our solution partners, and strategic partners,” Wong says. “The right partners are the ones who are switched on in the security market. They can come from IT or security. These companies are on the verge of crossing over with each other. Security companies will be looking to migrate from analogue to IP technology. For IT companies, they could be moving into security and they bring the IT stuff, but they will need to know more about the security segment. So we need to find the right integrators to integrate into this market.”

Axis offers three-day training courses to qualify partners, volume discounts and other support. It distributes in New Zealand through Hill Technology and Channel Ten.

Wong says it took a year for Axis to find the right person to take the regional sales position in Wellington.
