Mobile app downloads to surge by 2015

Mobile app downloads are expected to surge by 2015, says Juniper Research.
The analyst has predicted 25 billion apps will be downloaded in 2015, compared to the 2.6 billion that were downloaded on to mobile phones last year.
Juniper said the success of Apple's iTunes app store has spurred other mobile-related companies to launch their own app stores.
However, the research firm warned those looking to enter the market that they need to be able to produce unique content.
"Apple has been able to achieve several billion downloads from a comparatively small handset base because customers are buying the iPhone for the apps," said Dr Windsor Holden in Juniper's 'Mobile app stores' report.
"That's not been the case with other handsets. So even if you have a subscriber base of tens of millions, your addressable market is a fraction of that -- and spread across a variety of operating systems and handsets."
Juniper also said that Freemium apps -- which are free to download but generate revenue through in-app premium subscription services, were becoming more popular.
