Asus launches higher-capacity, SSD-based mini-laptop

Asus revealed the S101 Eee PC Ultimate prototype in Taiwan. The laptop, with a brown exterior, will weigh less than 1 kg and boasts a 1.6 GHz Atom N270 processor. What sets it apart from the current generation of Eee PCs is that it will ship with either a 32 GB or 64 GB solid state drive. It has a 10.2 inch backlit LED display and a battery life of 4-5 hours. Although there has been no release date specified, it is expected that the 'Ultimate' will hit the markets in September.

The 32 GB edition will ship for US$699 and the 64 GB for $899. Although when revealed, the laptop did have the Eee logo emblazoned on it, Asus informed that it will not launch as an Eee PC. The laptop will measure 2.2 inches at its thickest and will also be available in the regular white color. Similar to the earlier generation of Eee PCs, this one will also not have an optical drive with the main purpose of keeping the chassis as small as possible.
