Australia's Kogan launched its Kogan Mobile in New Zealand today in a move aimed squarely at Spark's successful Skinny brand and 2Degrees.

Kogan founder Ruslan Kogan joined Vodafone CEO Jason Paris in Auckland to launch the new mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), promising to "shake up the telco market".

Kogan Mobile will offers sharp prepay services with roaming add-ons. It will also be the only challenger brand currently powered by Vodafone NZ, mirroring a similar relationship in Australia.

Vodafone NZ is now independent, owned by Infratil and investor Brookfield, and charting different paths from its UK parent.

CEO Jason Paris said New Zealanders loved great prices and likened Kogan Mobile to the "Pak n Save of telco".

Other brands could follow Kogan Mobile, he said, either as MVNOs or Vodafone owned.

Kogan told investors last year it had sealed a deal with Vodafone NZ, but no more details were released until today.

The company also bought and operates the Dick Smith brand in New Zealand and Australia, after acquiring it in 2016.

Kogan Mobile delivers through an online only digital service. The offering brings unlimited standard calls and texts to New Zealand and Australia as standard on all voice plans, also offering generous data inclusions, and 30, 90 and 365 day prepay options.

Customers can bring their own device and their own number.

Kogan Mobile is promising easy setup, no hidden fees, no excess usage charges, tri-fit SIM card, and secure and reliable coverage.

It also offers competitive rates on international calls to 44 destinations, and international roaming as an add-on to 56 destinations.

Customers can select their desired data inclusion, of 1.5GB, 4GB, 15GB or 32GB worth of data per 30 days.

Prepay plans start with Kogan Mobile’s small plan offering unlimited standard calls and texts to New Zealand and Australia, with 1.5GB of data for use within New Zealand per 30 days for the equivalent of $13.40 when a customer signs up for a full 365 days.

An extra large plan offers unlimited standard calls and texts to New Zealand and Australia, with 32GB of data for use within New Zealand for the equivalent of $34.90 per 30 days when with sign up for a full 365 days.
