Award-winning cyber security start-up Defend is launching into Wellington with a high-profile hire.

Mike Martin comes from a leadership position in the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) to take up the role director and principal cyber security architect.

At NCSC, Martin led operational teams providing advanced cyber security protection to New Zealand organisations of national significance.

He provided technical and strategic IT and cyber security leadership there, both internally and across a range of domestic and international partner engagements.

“We have built a point of differentiation from traditional service providers and we lead conversations around protecting people, process and technology," said Defend CEO and director Nigel Everett.

Defend has built a managed services capability by developing an aggregated, automated cyber security platform (ACP) powered by machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Defend is positioning that as an alternative to what it calls the "traditional" security operations centre (SOC) model as well as on security incident and event management technologies (SIEM).

ACP was developed using tools created in-house and components from multi-vendor environments to deliver automated service through a scalable subscription.

Martin has provided technical and strategic IT and cyber security leadership both internally and across a range of domestic and international partner engagements, Everett said.

Defend was an iSANZ award winner last year.
