2degrees taps DXC Red Rock to overhaul payment processes

Technology provider integrates Oracle and Basware systems

2degrees has partnered with DXC Red Rock to overhaul manual payment processes, leveraging automation to boost user engagement levels.

The move was triggered by an over-reliance on manual and paper-based systems, which caused “significant user frustrations” with the end-to-end purchase to pay process.

With long purchasing approval delays often hindering urgent work, the telecommunications provider selected Basware to offer purchase-to-pay functionality (P2P), meaning Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) integration was required.

As a result, DXC Red Rock was recruited as a strategic consulting partner to achieve integration between both systems.

Terms of the agreement - a first between the two companies in New Zealand - also leveraged DXC’s functional and technical consulting capabilities, to specify integration solutions, develop integrations using XML translation and conduct testing.

The DXC team delivered the full integration and initial testing within five months, with 2degrees subsequently beginning independent testing with a go live date scheduled for 2019.

“We employed a customised approach, however our knowledgeable consultants were able to go in and leverage their previous customer experience to support an optimal outcome as quickly as possible for 2degrees,” said Matt Farrer, consulting manager of New Zealand at DXC.

Step by step

Since launching in 2009, 2degrees has continued to expand across the New Zealand telecommunications market, through a nationwide mobile network and increased customer base.

Coupled with the acquisition of internet service provider Snap in 2015, the business now serves more than one million customers, housing 1200 staff and 55 retail outlets.

In addition, the provider’s revamped mobile network is now complemented by ADSL, VDSL and UFB services.

As a result, Alex Moffatt - IT application delivery manager at 2degrees - realised that existing “labour-intensive” purchase-to-pay processes were “significantly impacting” business productivity.

“With DXC consultants working side by side with our internal team, they were able to offer significant added value,” Moffatt added. “They advised us on the integration architecture, design and implementation processes which was extremely helpful.”

According to Moffatt, the business of buying lacked overall financial “rigour and efficiency”, with paper-based purchasing and invoicing taking too long.

In addition, the manual intervention necessary meant errors occurred, leaving end-users frustrated with long approval cycles, resulting in a need to improve procurement "visibility, efficiency, and control".

Moffatt said end-to-end purchase-to-pay automation would facilitate reduced order processing times, and incoming invoices could be handled without unnecessary manual user intervention.

To achieve such requirements, 2degrees selected Basware to provide an online web-based portal, in addition to integration to its existing Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) solution.

Subsequently, DXC was engaged to provide Oracle EBS functional and technical consulting to determine requirements, specify integration solutions, develop integrations using XML translation and conduct testing.

“We now view DXC as a trusted partner,” Moffatt said. “They offered us speed and agility with thought leadership and significant Oracle EBS subject matter expertise that we just didn’t have internally.”

To kick-start proceedings, DXC initially set up a team of consultants to run exploratory workshops, with four consultants meeting with 2degrees team members to gain an in-depth understanding of business requirements.

The consultants also provided suggestions for future system improvements, and looked at some reoccurring month-end issues to offer recommended actions.

“We’re very thankful for DXC’s assistance, and we’ve learnt a lot,” Moffatt added. “We’ve subsequently selected DXC to provide Oracle EBS managed services moving forward.”
