Huawei builds channel for NZ enterprise business

Huawei's early enterprise customers were won directly, but the vendor is now looking to build a channel

With early direct customer wins to its credit, Huawei is now building a channel for its enterprise products in New Zealand.

Best known as a supplier of networking gear to telcos, the Chinese giant also targets enterprises with a range of server, storage and networking gear and software.

To date, its early New Zealand customers have been won through direct sales, Huawei New Zealand's head of technology, Michael Chan, said.

However, New Zealand is more of a channel market and the company is now focused on building a partner network.

Locally speaking, the signs are already there, with products from Huawei's Enterprise Business Group (EBG) distributed by Ingram Micro and Exeed.

Meanwhile in December, Ingram Micro appointed Josh Sumich, previously with Voke Technology, as its Huawei business development manager to assist and support resellers.

Huawei's biggest local enterprise customer wins have been in wireless networking at Lincoln and Massey universities.

Outside of tertiary education, Huawei claims The Warehouse Group as a user of its server and storage as well as its networking gear.

At Mobile World Congress, Huawei's EBG displayed a wide range of technologies and use cases for its products, including artificial intelligence, smart city, software defined networking and software defined storage as well as video conferencing and enterprise networking.

In particular, it announced version 8 of its FusionStorage platform at the conference.

FusionStorage is a distributed cloud storage system which promises to merge legacy data islands through software that integrates local storage resources into distributed storage pools to provide block, object, or file storage resources with high levels of automation.

In addition to reducing storage management and migration headaches, that could also ease pain-points for companies wanting to deploy big data analytics and AI technologies among other applications, the company said.

However, the enterprise business is not immune to the geopolitical and security issues challenging the vendor's carrier business internationally. Questions have been asked about the company's role within university networks and infrastructure as well.

Massey University reportedly sought advice from the GCSB last year before it signed its contract with Huawei.

Internationally, EBG claims over 200 Fortune Global 500 companies as customers.
