The Ministry of Health has completed a $48.6 million IT infrastructure shift to Revera's the all-of-government infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) platform.

The project moved physical data centre locations and all associated asset management equipment and enabled a refresh and upgrade of data centre infrastructure, the Ministry said in its annual review.

"A well-staged migration plan of applications and data from the existing data centres to the IaaS data centres enabled all application and data services to be successfully migrated with minimal downtime experienced," the report stated.

"Capacity and performance can now be increased in real-time as required."

Spark-owned Revera has invested in the health sector, with the technology provider adding digital health to its professional services portfolio last year; appointing hospital doctor and digital health expert Dr Will Reedy to lead the effort.

At the time Revera cited other cloud migration work it was undertaking for Homecare Medical, Waikato DHB, and Western Bay of Plenty Primary Health Organisation as well as the Ministry.

At Waikato DHB, the provider is managing in a three-year project to shift 700-odd applications to its Homeland Government IaaS Cloud.

The Ministry also joined a swelling list of large government organisations shifting to Office 365 and leaving legacy Lotus Notes behind in a $1.2 million project.

"Planning continued for the move away from Lotus Notes to Microsoft’s Office 365," the ministry reported.

"Following business case approval and completion of [a] business impact assessment, a high-level technical design has been finalised outlining how the different technical components will be established to enable the use of the Office 365 platform.

"Detailed implementation planning is scheduled to start early in 2018/19 on moving mail, calendar and contact to this new platform."

Among other significant ICT contracts awarded by the Ministry during 2018 were a $6.6 million software renewal with IBM and $2.5 million for planning and design of the National Screening solution for bowel cancer.
