Air New Zealand's Avi Golan picked up the big gong at the annual CIO Awards last night, being named CIO of the Year.

Golan headed a field of finalists including Chris Buxton, chief digital officer at Stats NZ Tatauranga Aotearoa; David Scullin, CIO of Ballance Agri-Nutrients and Roger Jones, chief technology officer at Auckland Transport.

The award for business transformation through digital and ICT went to Auckland Transport with finalists being Abano Healthcare, Fulton Hogan and Inland Revenue.

Animation Research founder Ian Taylor was honoured for his outstanding contribution to business and technology in New Zealand.

Four other awards were made at an event last night at Auckland's Viaduct Event Centre.

The emerging ICT leaders was Rohan Aggrawal, head of digital and technology solutions, AMP Financial Services NZ.

Finalists in that category were Josh Warman, chief customer officer, Spectrum Consulting and Staci Scott, digital product manager of The Warehouse Group.

The awards for engaging youth in ICT went to TechWomen with finalists being MindKits and MYOB.

The best ICT team culture award went to payments management company Fraedom ahead of Air New Zealand, eStar and The Instillary.

Peter Wise, country manager of IDC New Zealand, said the high standard of entries reflected the growing importance of ICT in the delivery of business and digital strategies.

"The examples that the winners set in driving business transformation initiatives in their organisations demonstrate to all in the industry what is possible when leadership is combined with a culture of innovation and change," he said.
