Datacom has opened doors for business this morning despite a fire ripping through the reception and first floor of the company’s new Auckland office on Friday evening.

Reseller News can reveal that the fire originated behind reception on the night of 8 June, resulting in the evacuation of the technology provider’s service desk teams.

“No one was harmed,” a spokesperson for Datacom told Reseller News. “The smoke and water suppression system did its job, and while there is some smoke and water damage, there was no damage to Datacom’s technical operations.”

The office is located at 58 Gaunt Street in Auckland, nestled in a technology hub which also includes Microsoft, HP, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, DXC Technology and IBM nearby, alongside Grid AKL, ASB, Fonterra and Air New Zealand.

At this stage, it is unclear what caused the fire in the first place.

“Clean up teams have been working over the weekend, and parts of the first floor are still being repaired,” the spokesperson added. “The office as a whole will be open for business on Monday morning.”

Providing 1700 square metres, the Gaunt Street building is owned by Goodman Property and built by Fletcher Construction, housing a maximum of 1500 staff.

As reported by Reseller News, Datacom occupies 13,500 square metres of the building which boasts a Five Green Star design rating and is built to the latest earthquake standards.

Datacom first moved into the property in May 2017, initially bringing more than 1100 staff together from across five locations in Auckland, ending a seven-year search for a new home in the process.

The state-of-the-art building is driven by technology, with a build room for staff to test creations, Microsoft Surface displays to supplement a company wide deployment of Skype for Business, and room bookings controlled by software Datacom itself created, called Junctions.

Networking is almost entirely provided by high capacity wi-fi and power is backed up with a 1.2 megawatt generator.

Furthermore, staff are treated to open plan workplaces, a large and striking cafeteria, a quiet room, 120 bike racks and many different types of collaborative work spaces.
