Brent Carey promoted to become New Zealand's second domain name commissioner.

New Zealand's domain name administrator has a new boss after an international recruitment process led to an internal promotion.

Brent Carey, formerly the Domain Name Commission's chief operations and policy officer, has been named as acting commissioner in the wake of an organisational review of the InternetNZ group last year.

Carey, who left the Office of the Australian Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman to join the DNCL in July 2017, will be formally appointed in mid-March.

He has over 18 years’ experience in customer service, regulatory, compliance and integrity roles throughout Australia, New Zealand and Asia.

The appointment follows parent company InternetNZ’s recent announcement of Jordan Carter as group CEO and chair of the Domain Name Commission Board.

Carey will replace Debbie Monahan who became the first commissioner in 2002.

"We are pleased to have found someone with extensive compliance, commercial and stakeholder skills in Brent," said David Farrar, current chair of the DNC board.

A graduate in law and arts from Wellington's Victoria University, Carey is a life member of the Australian Privacy Foundation, a past board member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals Australia/New Zealand and a member of Veski Connection, a group of scientists and business leaders supporting science and innovation in the State of Victoria.

“This is an exciting time for the .nz space. I am looking forward in the first few months in the role to tell our story better, work with our data and to involve all of .nz’s stakeholders to ensure we work together for the future of New Zealand’s internet communities.” Carey said.

Carey is a Founder of Taranaki based online butchery startup Green Meadows Beef and has been a past chairman of the non-profit Rainbow Youth NZ.
