FireEye A/NZ boss departs for tech start-up

Richard Metcalfe takes leadership role at Phantom

FireEye regional director for Australia and New Zealand, Richard Metcalfe, has left the security vendor to join security automation and orchestration start-up Phantom.

Metcalfe joined FireEye in 2014 as an account director having been promoted throughout the years until he was appointed as regional director in July 2016.

He starts as Phantom's director for Asia Pacific and Japan on Monday 15 January.

Phantom was established in 2014 in the US by Oliver Friedrichs, who worked for big security names including Symantec and McAfee, and Symantec veteran Sourabh Satish.

Metcalfe said that his decision to join Phantom was a shift in the market that saw organisations leveraging orchestration and automation for security purposes.

"As organisations are struggling to stitch together the different security technologies they've invested in and there isn't a common way to integrate those, organisations suffer from too many alerts," Metcalfe told ARN.

Metcalfe explained that businesses are not able to scale just with people and also face budget constrains.

Prior to joining FireEye, Metcalfe also worked for Softcat, Dimension Data and F5 Networks.

"Transitions in our industry is natural and we wish Richard Metcalfe well," a FireEye spokesperson told ARN. "Eric Hoh, president of Asia Pacific, is managing the business in A/NZ and we are excited about the opportunity in the region and with our partners."

Former FireEye systems engineering manager, Christian Frain, has also made the move to Phantom at the beginning of 2018. He joined Phantom as the presales security engineer for Asia Pacific and Japan.

Frain has previously worked for DDLS, Juniper Networks and F5 Networks.
