Veritas names Greg Hughes as new CEO

Bill Coleman joins The Carlyle Group

Data management vendor, Veritas Technologies, has named Greg Hughes as its new CEO, replacing Bill Coleman who will continue on the board as a trusted advisor and will also join The Carlyle Group as an operating executive.

Hughes, who was most recently the CEO of Serena Software, joined Veritas in 2003. During his seven-year stint at Veritas, Hughes held various executive roles in the lead up to the merger with Symantec. He was then named president of enterprise products at Symantec, which involved the responsibility for all Veritas products.

“After a thorough search, we are confident that Greg is the right leader for Veritas moving forward,” Veritas chairman, Bill Krause, said. “Greg has a proven track record of strategic and operational success in enterprise software, knows the company well from his previous work with Veritas and Symantec, and understands the data management demands and challenges facing Veritas’ large customer base.”

In the past two years that Coleman has been at the helm, he oversaw the diligence process around the company’s separation from Symantec in 2015 as well as helping it transition from an on-premises backup and recovery company to a multi-cloud data management company.

Hughes said it had the right leadership, product set and expertise to capitalise on existing and future growth opportunities.

In September, Veritas made two new appointments with Barbara Spicek signing on as vice president of global channels and alliances, and David Noy returning to take on the role as vice president of product management.

Spicek took on responsibility for the storage vendor's global base of channel and alliance partners, focusing on delivering programs to help partners differentiate in the market and drive growth within its 360 data management portfolio.

Not long after the new appointments were announced, Veritas made a decision to restructure its Sydney operations, impacting more than 60 roles in the local office.

“Veritas continually reviews its real estate holdings in an effort to streamline its operations worldwide,” the spokesperson said at the time.

“While Veritas remains committed to maintaining a site in Sydney, some technical support and administrative roles may be impacted, pending the consultation and redeployment period which has now started.”
