Workday invests in global support centre in Auckland

Financial and human resource cloud player is hiring fast to fill a 140-seat facility in Auckland.

Cloud software heavyweight Workday is establishing a global support centre in Auckland to complement its others in the US and Ireland

Workday, which provides enterprise cloud applications for finance and human resources, also revealed that in addition to Fletcher Building, which came on board in 2013, it has won cloud accounting company Xero and Air New Zealand as local customers.

Air New Zealand is replacing a Peoplesoft human resources system, Workday's managing director of ANZ, Rob Wells, said.

Workday is hiring fast and plans to have more than 80 local staff by the end of the year to help fill its newly-minted 140-seat support centre and office near Auckland's Wynyard Quarter innovation precinct.

Experienced implementation consultants are a high priority, but network engineers and people with experience in production systems are also being targeted.

Chris Byrne, senior vice president of global operations and support at Workday, said Auckland was chosen to host the new support centre for four broad reasons: access to talent; a complementary timezone to the other support centre in Dublin; ease of travel to the US; and because it offered data privacy compliance that met the expectations of Workday's European customers.

Byrne said Workday was trying to ensure its local staff also had satisfying career paths. One project being run locally, the development of an availability and trust site for customers, was an early sign of that.

The Dublin support centre started with just a few people, she said, but after taking on such projects now boasts a staff of 750.

Workday's partners are mostly international giants such as Accenture, Deloitte and KPMG with some regional boutique providers.

Wells said the company was very careful about building and certifying its partners to ensure customer satisfaction.

Australian customers include giants such as Commonwealth Bank and Qantas while globally it can cite Amazon and Walmart. However, Wells said, some customers are as small as a couple of hundred staff.

Peoplesoft was bought by Oracle in 2005. The company's founder, Dave Duffield, then went on to co-found Workday.

More than 1,000 organisations use Workday globally, with over 100 of those represented in New Zealand.
