Webroot buys Cyberflow Analytics

Acquisition looks to enhance the security vendor’s machine learning capabilities

Cybersecurity vendor, Webroot, has bought CyberFlow Analytics, a San Diego start-up specialising in applying data science to network anomaly detection, for an undisclosed fee.

Webroot said the acquisition will allow the vendor to add CyberFlow’s FlowScape analytics solution to its network layer, which will bolster its market leadership in machine learning-based security technology.

“Today, one of the only things attackers can’t find out about your network is what’s normal," Webroot CEO, Dick Williams, said.

"This solution can identify and alert on potentially malicious activity that deviates from normal traffic in milliseconds.

"Our machine learning platform powers the most cutting-edge endpoint protection, threat intelligence services, and now network analytics, enabling us to stay ahead of evolving threats for our customers.”

FlowScape can find identity network anomalies in IPv4 and IPv6 traffic and discover newly connected devices, before they can affect a network.

Security analytics are alerted via a SIEM solution or the automated visualisation console offered as part of the solution.

CyberFlow Analytics co-founder, Tom Caldwell, said he founded the company with a vision of applying data science to help solve the most pressing cybersecurity challenges.

“CyberFlow Analytics is a trailblazer in the field of Network Behavioral Analytics," he added.

"By using unsupervised machine learning for real-time detection of anomalous high risk activity, CyberFlow Analytics has solved a problem that previously required significant manpower and resources.

"We are very excited to join Webroot and enhance both FlowScape and Webroot next-generation security solutions."
